Murrell family papers, 1830-1959.

The collection consists of papers of the Murrell family of Oxford (Newton County, Ga.) and Winterville (Clarke County, Ga.) from 1830-1959. The papers include correspondence, business papers, receipts, and account books. The correspondence consists of seven Civil War era letters (1863-1865) to and from George Washington Harlan Murrell, but the majority consists of letters to Ermine and Elizabeth Murrell in Winterville (Ga.) from family and friends. The business papers contain receipts and indentures pertaining mostly to George Washington Harlan Murrell and George T. Murrell. The collection also contains reminiscences of George T. Murrell regarding his imprisonment at Point Lookout Prison (Md.) during the Civil War, receipts (1830-1950), individual photographs of the Emory University graduating class of 1900, and numerous account books relating to various businesses owned by the Murrell family in Walton and Newton Counties.

George Washington Harlan Murrell (b. 1806), merchant, emigrated to Walton County, Georgia where he married Judith Amanda Melvina Elizabeth Stone, daughter of Rene and Sidney Briscoe Stone.
